Some hope as conjoined twins Veena-Vani turn 14

Doctors said they were waiting for orders from the government to shift the twins.

Hyderabad: Conjoined twins Veena and Vani on Saturday celebrated their 14th birthday at Niloufer Hospital, their home for 11 years.

The girls were said to be a little worried about their proposed shifting to a state home as they would be moved out of a familiar atmosphere but are confident and well-prepared for the new phase in life.

Doctors said they were waiting for orders from the government to shift the twins.
Doctors hoped that there would be some news from the specialists in Australia to whom their medical papers had been sent for a study on surgery prospects.

The doctors also discussed the separation surgery of 13-month-old conjoined twins Anias and Jadon McDonald, who were connected by the top of their heads, carried out successfully in New York on Friday.

A senior doctor, on condition of anonymity, said: “What we understand from the case of McDonalds is that the parents were briefed and they understood the major risks like long-term brain damage for one or both boys and also the possibility of death. They were prepared for the and accepted that risk.”He pointed out that this had not happened in the case of Veena and Vani.

“Besides the medical facilities, when the twins were first brought in, we were not that advanced,” he said. As the girls get older, risk factors have increased, which is making them seek specialised advice on whether separation can be carried out at such an advanced age.
