Thrissur Pooram: Thousands witness sample fireworks

A total of 2,000 kilograms of gunpowder can be used by each of the devaswoms.

Thrissur: Tens of hundreds of Pooram buffs thronged the inner footpath of Swaraj Round and main roads and lanes leading to Thekkinkkad Maidan in the heart of the town to witness the sample fireworks held on Friday night that lit up the sky.

The sample fireworks which was expected to begin at 7 p.m. started at 8.20 p.m. after through inspection by explosives experts. Compared to the earlier years,the decibel levels were low and focus was more on sound and light.

The Paramekkavu devaswom was the first to start the sample fireworks followed by Thiruvambadi. Adhering to safety measures, the crowds were not allowed to enter the Swaraj Round to have a close view of the fireworks and all the roads leading to the round surrounding the maidan were blocked at their entrance.

Both the devaswoms normally use crackers ‘gundu’, ‘amittu’, dynamites and ‘kuzhimini’ for the sample fireworks. A total of 2,000 kilograms of gunpowder can be used by each of the devaswoms. Fireworks expert Mudathikkodu Satheesh is heading the team of workers making firecrackers for Thiruvambadi and Stibin Stephen was roped in by Paramekkavu.
