Udupi Sri Krishna temple to get Suvarna Gopuram

With every sq. ft needing 40 gms of gold, around 2,500 square feet would require 100 kg gold.

Chennai: The temple tower above the sanctum sanctorum of the famous Udupi Sri Krishna will be adorned with gold ahead of the “Paryaya Mahotsava” that was initiated by Sri Madhvacharya, the saint philosopher, during 13th century for Sri Krishna puja.

As the famous temple city of Udupi, the abode of Lord Sri Krishna is gearing up to host the most awaited biennial event, the Udupi Sri Krishna Suvarna Gopura Nirmana Samithi, Sri Palimaru Math, has proposed to adorn the temple tower with gold.

The project would cost Rs 32 crore. “The temple structure is akin to the Lord’s body. So, protecting the temple is the duty of every devotee. Keeping in with the ancient tradition, the renovation of the temple tower above the sanctum sanctorum at Udupi is being undertaken and it is being adorned with gold,” says the manager of the Udupi Sri Krishna Suvarna Gopura Nirmana Samithi.

With every sq. ft needing 40 gms of gold, around 2,500 square feet would require 100 kg gold. “This grand endeavour requires Rs. 32 crore and can be accomplished solely by the contribution of crores of devotees. We request every devotee to contribute towards this Suvarna Gopura Nirmana endeavour as per their capacity, and earn the grace of Udupi Sri Krishna,” he urged.

During the forthcoming Paryaya Mahotsava, on Jan. 18, 2018, devotees will have a golden opportunity to witness the handing over of the puja rights of Sri Krishna by the historic 5th Paryaya Swamiji of Pejavara Matha, Sri Sri Vishvesha Teertha to Sri Sri Vidyadheesha Teertha of Sri Palimaru Math, Udupi. Sri Vidyadheesha Teertha will ascend the Sarvagna Peetha for the second time on that auspicious day.

The idol of Sri Krishna, which was previously worshipped by Goddess Rukmini, was installed by Sri Madhvacharya at Udupi to carry out the dual responsibility of performing pujas besides the propagation of Madhva philosophy. The acharya had established eight Maths (monasteries) and appointed eight saint-disciples to head these Maths. The rotation of puja rights among these eight Maths is symbolised in the “Paryaya Mahotsava.”

The present pontiff of Sri Palimaru Math Sri Vidy-adheesha teertha Sripaada, who introduced the mid-day meals programme for school children, had offered diamond ‘Kavacham’ to Sri Krishna during his 1st Paryaya.
