Chennai: The city police have arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly stalking and harassing a 24-year-old woman on Facebook and WhatsApp, on Sunday.
The arrested was identified as B.Velu (47) of Mariamman Koil Street at Mathirivedu in Tiruverkadu. Velu is a building contractor.
According to police, Velu had been persistently harassing the woman, whose name was kept secret due to the privacy issue, also a resident of Tiruverkadu through Facebook and WhatsApp. “The accused had allegedly deceived the girl by concealing his first marriage and forced her to elope with him a couple of months ago,” the police said.
Based on the complaint from the girl’s father, the Tiruverkadu police had registered a case then and arrested him.
Subsequently, Velu got bail a few days ago. “Upon coming out of the detention, Velu had allegedly contacted the girl through social media and reportedly tried to woo her again,” the police said. He also allegedly harassed her by sending messages.
However, once bitten twice shy – the woman informed her family and filed a fresh complaint with Tiruverkadu police. “The woman sought police help to end the menace,” the police said. A case was filed based on the complaint.
During investigation, the police found truthfulness in the complaint. “Following the verification of messages sent by Velu to the woman, we have arrested Velu on Sunday,” the police added.
Velu was remanded to judicial custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
