KOZHIKODE: The bus stop opposite to the corporation building at city beach, here, which was in a dilapidated condition earlier, received a facelift on Saturday with an eco-touch. Thanks to the novel approach of Junior Chamber International (JCI) members who renovated the bus shelter using old plastic bottles and vehicle tyres.
Instead of usual sidewalls, about 1,000 bottles filled with sand have been used for constructing the sides along with stones from the demolished bus-stop.
For proper ventilation, terracotta bricks have been used. About 100 tyres of vehicles, painted in blue color have been used to decorate the bus stop. The seats of the bus-stop are have been made out of tyres. Two solar lights have been fitted atop too.
JCI district president Ayna Tanton told DC that through this, the organisation is trying to convey the message of proper waste management and eco-friendly development. “The 102 members of the organisation personally collected the plastic bottles and used tyres from various homes and shops across the city. The members themselves chipped in with all manual jobs for the renovation which was completed within 10 days.”
JCI National president Rajashree Bhaje who inaugurated the bus stop said that the initiative is something that everyone should encourage and adopt. “We will do everything to maintain this eco-friendly bus stop and if the corporation permits we are ready to extend this project to other parts of the city,” she added.
