Hyderabad: Student-teacher equation has changed

oday, students are well-informed and even voice their opinion in the classes.

HYDERABAD: Students are more aware these days, said teachers. This has led to a change in the mode of teaching.

Mrs Shukla Sen, a 56-year-old teacher, said, “Teaching is no longer limited to lecturing students but it has become a discussion, a debate on topics as students are exposed to so many themes on the internet.” Earlier, whatever the teacher said was gospel. Today, students are well-informed and even voice their opinion in the classes, she added.

With digital exposure, students have began questioning racism and stereotypes.
Teachers said that parents are more involved in their ward’s schooling and even challenge teachers.

Deepthi Divakar, a 29-year-old teacher, said, “Now parents are more aware. The respect for teachers is low. Parent-teacher meetings are well-attended and parents question how marks are awarded to students.”

Discipline of students has also changed due to parents involvement. Letters sent to home detailing mischievous activities a student did in the class are not always well-received, said teachers.

“It is a different equation with students now. We have to communicate better with them and cannot be harsh. More lines have been drawn,” said Deepthi.

Malladi Phanimala, a 44-year-old teacher, said, “I have always believed that a respectable gap should be maintained between a student and a teacher. Students should go back to their roots.”
