Rs 100-crore bonanza for Maharajas College

Finance Minister, an alumnus, announces the project to scale up its academic standards

Kochi: The state government will implement Rs 100-cr worth projects in Maharajas College, which has been declared as a Centre of Excellence, in the next five years. Speaking at a function to submit a Mission of Projects in Kochi on Sunday, Dr Isaac, an alumnus of the college, stressed on the need for scaling up the academic standards of the college. “Anybody can undertake the construction of buildings and other civil works. But that alone is not enough to improve the academic standard of an educational institution,” he said.

The reputation of an educational institution depends solely on its academic standards and the way to achieve the same is to improve standards of teaching and research, the minister said. The college should be able to attract the services of former students who have shown excellence in various fields of professions, he said. “The existing teaching staff should create an opportunity for these people to take classes for students in the college”, he said.

The experience of former students would be an inspiring example for the existing students, he said. The minister also offered to work as a research guide in the department of economics in this regard. The meeting had discussed the draft of the projects that needed to be implemented in the college for the next 10 years. The meeting chaired by Hibi Eden, MLA, was attended by college principal N.N. Beena, college governing council chairman T.V. Francy, college development committee member CICC Jayachandran, alumni association president Justice Gopinath among others.
