Ernakulam Medical College set to prepare Detailed Project Report for development

This will be a five-year expansion plan for the college after meeting the immediate requirements in the Rs 1.1 crore resuscitation package'

KOCHI: Buoyed by the announcement of finance minister Dr T.M. Thomas Isaac in Kochi last week in Kochi that funds won’t be a problem for the expansion of Ernakulam Government Medical College, the college authorities have decided to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the expansion of the college. This will be a five-year expansion plan for the college after meeting the immediate requirements in the Rs 1.1 crore ‘resuscitation package’ being approved by the State Government. PWD is expected to prepare the DPR. The Finance Minister while making the announcement had made it clear that he needed DPR for any proposal.

“The PWD Executive Engineer needs to be consulted on this and according to our plan and specifications, they can prepare the cost estimate. They have consultants for technical aspects also,” EMC principal Dr V.K. Sreekala told this paper on Saturday. She said that the DME and Health Secretary too will be consulted on this and the DPR will be submitted to the DME which will be forwarded to the Government. “The preliminary estimate has been put at Rs 100 crore which will be reassessed by the PWD,” she said.

The EMC seeks to achieve a Centre of Excellence status in the next five years by setting up a super specialty block, PG hostel, dental block, paramedical institute, staff quarters, playground and an indoor stadium. “Our priority after implementing the resuscitation package would be to start cardiology and neurology wings along with a hostel for PG students. The building near cancer centre can be used for this. The hostel for PG students is essential to retain MCI approval for the courses,” she said. She said that the super specialty wing of the hospital should have cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology and gastroenterology wings.
