Thanjavur: Tension after woman's death in GH

The woman died the same day she delivered her baby and the parents alleged it was due to a botched operation.

Thanjavur: An agriculture worker Sudha (27), wife of Mathiyalagan of Muthayalpuram in Kothankudi village near Kumbakonam died after a caesarean operation was performed on her and a baby delivered at the government district headquarters hospital at Kumbakonam on Saturday, triggering tension in the town.

A pregnant Sudha who developed labour pains was taken to the primary health centre at Kothankudi. Doctors advised her to go to the government district headquarters hospital at Kumbakonam.

Doctors who had first said that she would deliver only after 20 days, later performed a caesarean operation. Sudha delivered a baby on Saturday afternoon, but developed fever at 10 pm and died. Her parents and husband staged a demonstration in the hospital, alleging that she had died due to a botched operation.

After police intervened, they withdrew the agitation. On Sunday morning they again staged a demonstration in which members of the DMK and VCK participated. K.Anbalagan, Kumbakonam MLA (DMK) came and spoke to the doctors. Later, the body of Sudha was taken to the Thanjavur Medical College hospital for post-mortem.
