Thiruvananthapuram: Police alert on online game

Prank messages from Japan, Mexico.

Thiruvananthapuram: The state police has sounded an alert against the spread of a prank message through social media platforms like Whatsapp and Telegram to create scare of an online challenging game named Momo.

Though the police confirmed that no instance of anyone using the Momo challenge game was reported in the state yet, parents were advised to be vigilant over the social media use and internet usage of their children. Any suspicious activities in these lines should be immediately reported to the nearby police stations, cyber cell or cyber dome. Legal action will be initiated against those creating unnecessary scare, the police informed.

The Momo challege emerged several months after the Bluewhale challenge game scare, which also did not have any links in the state.

hiruvananthapuram-range IG Manoj Abraham said that the prank messages with a profile picture of the creature that represented the game was being circulated though Whatsapp and Telegram.

It threatens of damaging mobile phones unless the user ventures into the Momo challenge game.

"We had found that the numbers from the which the prank messages were from countries like Japan, Mexico and Colombia," he said.

Over the last couple of days many social media users made enquiries with the police through the police's official social media page regarding the Momo game scare, especially in the wake of reports that it would even lead children to commit suicide. The police could clarify that these were just pranks.

"Last year when the Bluewhale challenge scare emerged, many suicides in the state were linked to it. But we could not gather any evidence to substantiate such apprehensions," said Mr. Abraham who also heads the police Cyberdome.
