Karimnagar: Land loss fears woman, prompts suicide

Cops are now investigating the death.

Karimnagar: A 34-year old woman ended her life by consuming pesticide here on Thursday night. The incident happened at Suraram village in Mahadevapur mandal.

It’s claimed that Challa Swarupa, a native of Suraram, took her life fearing that her land would be acquired by officials attached to the proposed barrage at Medigadda - part of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme.

In a suicide note purportedly recovered from her residence, Swarupa wrote her family had debts of Rs 2 lakh. The couple’s annual income is a reported Rs 3 lakh per annum. Cops are now investigating the death.

According to relatives, Swarupa had become increasingly troubled after noticing revenue authorities conducting an alleged land-acquisition survey on Thursday. She is believed to have even asked officials if her land would be acquired for the water project.

“She was anxious about losing her land to the project,” said Srinivas. He added that they had purchased land by borrowing money from private lenders. The couple has two children.
