Amma eco pavilions to create awareness

The minister also said environment information centres would come up in 12 other districts.

Chennai: Environment minister K.C. Karuppannan on Friday said Amma eco pavilions would come up in 10 districts to create awareness among people on environmental issues.

Replying to the discussion on demands for grants to his ministry in the Assembly, he said the centres would inform the people about handling of wastes generated from industries, plastic, medical uses, construction, besides solid waste and e-waste management. It would also make the people aware about air and noise pollution, besides protection of natural resources.

The minister also said environment information centres would come up in 12 other districts. He said video conferencing facility would be provided for interaction of engineers working in the department and a superintendent engineer would be appointed in Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and a new zonal office would be set up at Salem to monitor the industrial pollution in the region.

Karuppannan said permission is given for companies to handle the waste generated by them through online. He said 35 factories had been given licence to handle e-waste and 3,535 companies are permitted to handle the industrial waste generated by them.

He said 351 factories in the city would be connected to the air pollution assessment centre in Chennai to monitor the levels of pollution and pollution of Cauvery river would be continuously monitored.

The government is taking action for plastic recyling, besides using the plastic waste collected by the local bodies to lay roads for a distance of 1,596 km.
