3-year-old, who fell into 27-feet borewell, dies in Nellore

For several hours, the girl remained trapped between loose soil and the PVC piping of the borewell which was 27 feet deep.

Nellore: G. Mounika, the three-year-old girl who had fallen into a borewell on Thursday, is no more.

Officials had pressed into service two earth movers for rescue operations but by the time emergency personnel reached her late on Thursday, it was too late.

The incident occurred at Nandemmapuram village in Kavali mandal of Nellore district.

Mounika was playing near her house when she fell into the borewell – which was being dug in a neighbour’s yard.

For several hours, the girl remained trapped between loose soil and the PVC piping of the borewell which was 27 feet deep.

Doctors believe Mounika must have died at least three hours before her body was extracted from the pit.

Senior officials, including district collector Muthyala Raju and joint collector A. Md. Imtiaz rushed to the village and were later seen consoling Mounika’s grieving parents.

Her father, Gopal, told this newspaper that they would perhaps never recover from the shock.

A resident of Palaverkadu village in the Ponneri district of Tamil Nadu, Gopal is a fisherman.

The family was staying with relatives in Nandemmapuram when the incident occurred.

Gopal’s wife Tirupatamma had given birth to a child just 20 days ago and was recovering at her parents’ home.
