Thiruvanathapuram: Kitchen bins mooted as solution to bird menace

The corporation would explore the possibility of setting up a plastic recycling plant in the locality.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation has decided to suggest to the Airports Authority of India to install kitchen bins in all households around the Thiruvanathapuram international airport to prevent the frequent bird hit incidents caused by piling up of garbage near the airport premises. Mayor V.K. Prasanth said that though the airport officials had proposed setting up of a centralised waste treatment facility in the locality as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme, identifying land for the project would invite protests.

Hence, it has been decided to suggest that all houses in the locality should be provided with kitchen bins. The project would cover houses in four wards around the airport. The corporation would explore the possibility of setting up a plastic recycling plant in the locality. Thiruvananthapuram airport director George Tharakan said that once the proposal from the city corporation was received, the AAI would take an appropriate decision. The AAI has provision for undertaking CSR initiatives to the tune of up to '45 lakh. It had earlier constructed a model fish market at Perunelli near the airport.

Piling up of garbage around the compound walls of the airport had triggered the bird hit menace over the last couple of years. While the permissible bird hit incidents of an airport should be only two a year, in Thiruvananthapuram, seven bird hit cases have already occurred this year. A high-level meeting was convened by chief secretary S M Vijayanand recently to discuss the issue. It was also decided to take action against those dumping garbage near the airport premises.
