Kozhikode: Violent stray dogs can be killed and there are no laws to prevent people from doing it, said Minister for Local Administration Dr K.T. Jaleel. The state government had submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that stray dogs will not be killed to avoid the present legal issues, he told reporters on the sidelines of a function to release the draft master plan of Kozhikode urban area here on Sunday.
“People are killing troublesome dogs. When a dog attacks us, does anyone wait for a government order to deal with it,” he asked. “One can legally deal with a dog when it comes to attack us, just like in the case of a snake. Stray dog menace is an issue which we should deal with rationally and public support is required in this issue,” he added. He opined that a permanent solution for stray dog menace was sterilisation.
The state government should take steps to strengthen this process by launching mobile units for block panchayats, but it required time. “In many places, people are protesting against the establishment of Animal Birth Control Centres (ABC). In such places, there will be a delay in implementing the process. We require the support from NGOs and the public for that,” Dr Jaleel said.
