Kozhikode: Doctors, staff to be sensitised on minors giving birth

The motive is to provide awareness on the basic guidelines of how and when delivery cases are to be reported when the mother is a minor.

KOZHIKODE: In light of the increasing crimes involving adoption and hiding of delivery cases, the result of minor girls being raped, the district child protection unit, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), would sensitize its staff including doctors and paramedical staff on the delivery cases where minor girls are sexually abused and got pregnant.

On Wednesday, the first of its kind one-day workshop would be held at IMA hall, Kozhikode, where employees from both government and private hospitals have been encouraged to attend. The motive is to provide awareness on the basic guidelines of how and when delivery cases are to be reported when the mother is a minor.

“Though there are no significant cases in Kozhikode, where the babies of minor girls are secretly handed over to orphanages or others illegally, there is always the fear of illegal adoption. Basically, there is a lack of awareness among the hospital staff, including doctors, on how to report such incidents. Gynaecologists and pediatricians are invited for the workshop,” said district child protection officer Sheeba Mumthas C.K. The DCPO agreed that since doctors and nurses were directly dealing with cases, their awareness on the issue would be crucial.
