Muslim groups echo Indian Union Muslim League take on Islamic State

Regarding the uniform civil code (UCC), the organisations felt that it would put the secular fabric of the country in peril.

Kozhikode: Major Muslim organisations share the IUML position on three core issues —IS, Zakir Naik and uniform civil code. The Sunni EK faction, Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM), Nadvathul Mujahideen (Dr Husain Madavoor faction), Jamaat-e-Islami and Thab League Jamaat which took part in the all-party meeting convened by Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal here asserted that the IS did not represent Islam.

“All organisations will join hands to kickstart a campaign to reveal that the IS has nothing to do with Islam,” Mr Hyderali Thangal said. If Muslim youth are swayed by the propaganda of IS, it should be curbed by all means, he said. Meanwhile, the organisations endorsed that Zakir Naik was being targeted by the central government with media backing.

“Zakir Naik has been propagating the humane face of Islam through his umpteen speeches and debates,” said Mr Mukkam Ummar Faisy of Samastha EK faction. “Naik has delivered several speeches against terrorism, including that in Bangladesh. He should not be crucified as a terror instigator without any evidence,” he added.

Regarding the uniform civil code (UCC), the organisations felt that it would put the secular fabric of the country in peril. “It’s not an issue of Muslim community alone. It is a threat to the entire secular society,” the meeting opined. The organisations decided to hold a protest meet against the implementation of UCC in Kozhikode on July 31. Apart from Hyderali Thangal, IUML leaders E.T. Mohammad Basheer and K.P.A Majeed were present in the meet. The Sunni AP section kept off the function.
