Vyttila flyover work begins today

CM Pinarayi Vijayan to launch Vyttila project; Kundannoor made to wait.

KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to launch the works on the Vyttila flyover at a function to be held at 12 noon at Vyttila on Monday, but the people of Kundannoor and Maradu are not amused. The reason: The Government has not taken up works on the promised Kundannoor flyover on the NH 47 along with this. They will observe Monday as black day and will light up a ‘protest flame’ in the evening to register their protest against the government’s negative attitude towards the Kundannoor flyover works. Various political organizations, NGOs and councilors of Maradu municipality will join this protest flame.

“There is no logic in constructing the Vyttila flyover alone. If the Vyttila flyover is over and a flyover does not come up at Kundannoor, that will increase the congestion at Kundannoor junction and the whole of NH. In fact three highways join at Kundanoor junction including NH 47, NH 49 and NH 49 A. A large number of container trailers travel to the Madurai direction and back from the seaport. So it is of utmost importance to have a flyover at Kundanoor,” said Antony Asamparambil, Maradu Municipality councilor and INTUC leader who is among those who spearhead the movement to realize the flyover.

“Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the stone for both Vyttila and Kundannoor flyovers two years ago on the same day and it is strange that only the work of Vyttila flyover is taken up now. Tripunithura MLA M Swaraj now puts forth a case pending in the Kerala High Court as the reason for not taking up the work on Kundannoor flyover. We are proceeding to verify its locus standi vis a vis the project. Anyway the government has the responsibility to remove any obstacle. In fact they should have started the works simultaneously after removing all the blocks,” said Antony.
