KOZHIKODE: The two-day state working committee of the Indian Union Muslim League which concluded here on Sunday gave a clean chit to televangelist Zakir Naik after the Central government decided to issue an advisory to stop the broadcast of non-licensed channels in the country. Mr Naik, with his alleged inflammatory sermons through a private TV channel ‘Peace TV’ has been in the eye of a storm recently inviting criticism from various quarters.
IUML national secretary E.T. Muhammed Basheer, MP, said that the Centre’s move is against freedom of expression and practising religion. He added that the move reflects a conspiracy to curtail religious and personal freedom. “Naik powerfully presents the message of peace envisaged by the religion. His stances are against terrorism,” said the leader after showing Mr Naik’s videos.
The meeting also discussed the reasons behind the defeat in Thiruvambady and Koduvally. They criticised the Centre’s bid to bring Uniform Civil Code in the country. “Sharia laws are not man-made. They cannot be rewritten according to political interests. The Muslim League is against all terrorist outfits including the IS. The campaign against terrorism will be strengthened in the coming week,” said the MP. IUML state general secretary K.P.A. Majeed also attended the press conference.
