Waste technologies steal show at Rising Kerala

Urban cities face the enormous challenge of managing a gigantic load of solid waste.

KOZHIKODE: Waste, be it solid or liquid, municipal, electronic, medical, industrial, food or material, has been a prime concern in the State. In contrast, neighboring States are implementing various technologies for waste management. The Rising Kerala International Expo that began here on Friday has allotted a separate pavilion to showcase various international and local technologies used by other States and countries to tackle the increasing issues of waste management. One such technology introduced by a company from Pune is Bio Crux, that is placed at locations where the usage of bottles is high and can be recycled immediately after its use.

“Our technology is the process of crushing plastic waste especially bottles, making it easy for recycling. So far airports, malls, shopping complex, theatres, apartments use this technology in order to crush their plastic waste, which can be sent later for recycling,” said Kuldip Singh, stall in-charge of Bio Crux company. Talking about the importance of waste management in the State, M. Khalid, Chairman of Rising Kerala said, “There are innovative techniques to treat varied forms of wastes like waste to energy technologies, vermicomposting and bioremediation. However, with relevant regulations, guidelines and procedures in place, there is an increased need for specific waste solutions right from collection, sorting, processing, treating, converting, recycling and reusing. They will mostly be useful to young entrepreneurs to think about bringing such technologies to our homeland,” he added.

Urban cities face the enormous challenge of managing a gigantic load of solid waste. “It is not just a public health issue, but it is also turning out to be a serious law and order problem as people resort to violent methods to protest waste being dumped in their backyard”, said VKC Noushad, the convener of Rising Kerala. It is high time the government brings these technologies of waste management adopted by other States to Kerala, he added. The International Expo designed to achieve international status and attract domestic and foreign companies was inaugurated by Transport Minister AK Sasidhran. The other major highlights of the expo were the stalls featuring the latest technologies used in the footwear and food processing industry.
