Cauvery technical team to visit Tamil Nadu on October 9-10

Water was released from Mettur dam for samba cultivation this year on September 20 and from Grand Anicut on September 24.

Thanjavur: The High-level Central Technical Committee constituted by the Centre to assess the ground realities in the Cauvery basin on the direction of Supreme Court is likely to visit Mettur dam and delta districts on October 9 and 10.

The technical committee headed by G S Jha, chairman of Central Water Commission began its nine-day field visit of Cauvery basin from Mandya in Karnataka on Friday.

According to Public Works Department sources, the team is expected to visit Mettur and Bhavanisagar dams on October 9 and Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts on October 10. However, the sources added that there would not be any separate meetings with farmers but they may interact with farmers during their field visits.

Farmers of Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam are in need of water to sustain samba crop taken up under direct sowing.

A few spells of rain helped farmers to save crop so far. PWD is releasing water under turn system and this water, according to farmers, was not adequate to save the crops.

Water was released from Mettur dam for samba cultivation this year on September 20 and from Grand Anicut on September 24. The committee have to submit a report to Supreme Court by October 17 after assessing the ground realities in the Cauvery basin with Karnataka refusing to release more water sighting failed South West Monsoon while Tamil Nadu hoping to save at least samba crops.

Tamilisai condemns Stalin

Madurai: The BJP State President Tamilisai Soundarajan on Friday condemned the DMK leader M.K. Stalin for demanding the resignation of other party.

MPs in connection with the Cauvery water dispute. While stating the political parties in Tamil Nadu were attempting to politicise the issue, she said Stalin should have asked the DMK MP's to resign before participating in the huger protest organised by the party in Thanjavur Friday.
