Kanyakumari: More than 500 school students join protests against liquor shop

A shop at Pannipalam was also reportedly hired to house the new liquor outlet that was planned to be opened on Wednesday.

KANYAKUMARI: More than 500 school students took to the streets near Thackalai in Kanyakumari district on Wednesday protesting the district administration’s decision to open a State-run Tasmac liquor shop there.

Yielding to public pressure against opening a liquor shop at Koliporvilai near Thackalai, officials have decided to shift it from Koliporvilai to Pannipalam area near Aumanai in the region. A shop at Pannipalam was also reportedly hired to house the new liquor outlet that was planned to be opened on Wednesday.

Members of the public led by the former CPI (M) MLA, Leema Rose, however, registered their strong objection to open the liquor shop at Pannipalam, one of the thickly populated residential areas with schools and places of worship nearby.
Following the public protest, security had been beefed up in the region to ensure the inauguration of the Tasmac shop on Wednesday morning.
