Kozhikode Medical College Hospital to keep bodies of Maoists for 2 more days

MCH authorities have since handed over the letter to the Medical College police.

Kozhikode: The bodies of two Maoist leaders Kuppu Devarajan, 60, and Ajitha, 46, would be kept at the mortuary of Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode for a few more days. Sreedharan, brother of Kuppu Devarajan approached the MCH authorities on Tuesday to keep the body of his brother for two more days, expressing his inability to receive and transport the body to Tamil Nadu in the wake of the demise of Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa. MCH authorities have since handed over the letter to the Medical College police. The police is free to conduct the burial of Ajitha as her relatives had given it in writing that they are not ready to receive the body.

It is to be recalled that the police had granted the prayer of the relatives on November 26, after conducting the postmortem, to keep the bodies for two days and later the Sessions Court, Manjeri, had directed the police to keep the bodies in the mortuary till December 5, as the kith and kin wanted to seek legal remedies including a re-postmortem suspecting that the duo were killed in a fake encounter. Tirur DySP A.J. Babu who is in charge of the procedures told DC that police is not in a hurry. “Legally, we are free for the burial in case the relatives are not ready to receive them by Monday evening”, he said, adding that police is ready to wait a few more days.
