Mangaluru: A group of journalists who had gone to report news related to ostracisation of a family at Suralpady near Mangaluru were allegedly gheraoed and assaulted by a group near a madrasa on Tuesday.

“A man from Suralpady whose two children go to the madrasa had an argument with the madrasa authorities over making children stand in assembly even during rains. The madrasa authorities allegedly ostracised the family by removing them from the primary membership of the Jamath,” one of the journalists who was at the spot told DC.

“We received the information and on Tuesday. Four of us went to the madrasa to ask the Ustad about the incident and to take his version. We had just entered the madrasa premises after taking two photographs when a group questioned us and picked up an argument. They made allegations against us and also made an announcement on the mic. By then over 200 people gathered around us. One of the reporters managed to escape and inform the police, while three others were gheraoed. They also attacked us and forced us to sit in a car,” he said.

“The sub-inspector arrived at the spot later and took us out of the place,” he said.
The journalists submitted a memorandum to the police commissioner demanding action against those involved in the incident.
