Little progress in Jishnu Pranoy suicide case

Jishnu was found hanging in the bathroom of the college hostel on the evening of January 6.

THRISSUR: The probe into the death of Jishnu Pranoy, first-year degree student of Nehru College of Engineering at Pambady, has not reached any conclusion one month after the incident. His death had sparked off widespread student agitations in the state over the alleged high-handedness of the managements of self-financing colleges. Jishnu was found hanging in the bathroom of the college hostel on the evening of January 6 after he was allegedly subjected to physical and mental torture citing that he had copied during the examination held on the same day in the college.

As per the report of Irinjalakuda ASP Kiran Narayanan, special investigation officer, which was submitted to the State Human Rights Commission during the sitting held here last week, the SIT was awaiting the forensic report of nearly 10 objects like answers sheets of the examinations, diary notes of Jishnu along with other scientific evidence to reach a conclusion in the case. The ASP told DC that the forensic report was still awaited and the recording of statements from students who were the prime witnesses in the case was still on.

"I cannot give a timeframe for completing the investigation and as some students had problems in giving statements, we are collecting their statement as well," she said. Meanwhile, Mr K.K. Sreejith, Jishnu's uncle, told DC that they had apprehensions about the ongoing inquiry. "The college had suspended vice-principal N. Sakthivel, lecturer C.P. Praveen and PRO Sanjith K. Viswanathan over the incident, but the SIT has not yet collected their statements," he said.

When DC asked whether the statements of all the college officials facing allegations of torture were collected, Kiran Narayanan did not give a clear reply. She said that the probe was being conducted as per procedures. Mr Sreejith also noted that while the officials of Kerala Technical University and former North Zone ADGP Sudesh Kumar had made it clear that Jishnu had not copied during the examination, the college officials were saying that he had copied twice that led to his suicide.
