15 judges sworn in at Madras High Court

With their appointment, the total number of judges has gone up to 54 as against the sanctioned strength of 75.

Chennai: Fifteen judges were sworn-in on Wednesday as judges of the Madras high court. The Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul administered the oath of office to Justices V. Parthiban, R. Subramanian, M. Govindaraj, M. Sundar, R. Suresh Kumar, J.Nisha Banu, M.S. Ramesh, S.M. Subramaniam, Anita Sumanth, A.M.Basheer Ahamed, T. Ravindran, S. Baskaran, P. Velmurugan, G. Jayachandran and C.V. Karthikeyan at a simple function held at the new auditorium situated on the premises of the Madras HC.

Advocate General R. Muthukumarasamy, D. Selvam, Chairman of Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, R.C. Paul Kanagaraj, president of Madras high court advocates association and presidents of various other associations welcomed the new judges. With their appointment, the total number of judges has gone up to 54 as against the sanctioned strength of 75.

When media persons asked when will the process begin to fill the remaining vacancies, Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said, “As Chief Justice I cannot say anything on the subject. We are only hoping that once the process is over we will know exactly how many vacancies are left. With today's appointments we have 54 judges and it will be 56 including others serving outside the state. We will begin the process of appointment of judges for remaining vacancies later, and it is in the pipeline”.
