KOCHI: Setting a model, Ernakulam Range IG S. Sreejith registered as a stem cell donor with DATRI while attending the donor-receiver meeting here on Friday. Mr Sivaramakrishnan, who got a fresh lease of life through stem cell transplant, was a classmate and close friend of Mr. Sreejith. “In fact, I had no idea about the treatment of stem cell transplant to save blood cancer patients till my friend was diagnosed with the disease. Awareness creation on the importance of registering as a stem cell donor is crucial as there are thousands of patients who are waiting for matching donors,” he said.
This year, DATRI has received 600 requests for matching donors of which a considerable number is from children below the age of 10. Mr Sreejith also urged the DATRI representatives to conduct a special registration drive for police men. “I will request the police personnel in the five districts under my jurisdiction to be part of a novel initiative which will help save the lives of many,” he said.
