Bhopal: A bus carrying workers from Odisha returning to Surat rammed into a truck in the dead of night, leaving seven workers dead and a dozen injured on the outskirts of Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

The injured persons have been admitted to a local government hospital, according to Raipur senior superintendent of police Ajey Yadav.

The accident took place near Serikhedi village of the Telibandha police district. The bus rammed into the rear of the truck as it was making a turn on National Highway 53 at about 3.30 am. The impact was so hard the front and side of the bus were crushed, trapping several passengers in the wreckage.

Local people helped police remove the bodies of victims and injured persons from the bus. Police said the death toll may go up.

There were 59 workers in the bus, all from Ganjam district in Odisha going to Surat to work in the cloth mills there.
