Flower prices rise with big festive demand

Vendors are expecting huge crowds till Monday morning after which depending on the tune of sales, they would be celebrating Ganesh Chathurthi.

Chennai: With Ganesh Chathurthi and Onam falling in September both the demand and the prices of flowers are seeing a rise.

L. Padmini is not surprised at the surge in prices of flowers. “Can I stop wearing flowers in my hair? Can I not worship Ganesha on Monday? No. This is a part of the game each festival, all round the year. So, here I am after trying to bargain as much as I could,” she said.

“There is a huge demand. Prices are higher than usual but that has no effect on the demand,” A.Manohar, spokesperson for the flower market at Koyambedu, said.

“We source flowers from Krishnagiri, Devanahalli in Karnataka and Kuppam district in Andhra Pradesh,” he added. Another vendor at Koyambedu flower market added that jasmine) has major demand even though its prices are enough to burn holes in the pockets of buyers. Mallipoo which was costing '120 per kg two days back is now being sold for Rs 200 - Rs 300.
