Clean drive for Haritha Keralam

Major dump sites to be cleared on December 8.

Thiruvananthapuram: The launch of Haritha Keralam in Thiruvananthapuram will be marked by a host of clean-up activities across the city, as was decided at a meeting at the corporation on Saturday. Major dump sites in city will be cleared on December 8, the launch day. This will be as massive as the drive held on World Environment Day, with all councillors taking responsibility in their respective wards. In addition to corporation workers, the activity will be backed by Kudumbashree workers, NGO volunteers and service organisation representatives.

The activities towards Haritha Keralam launch will be kicked off on December 6 with a procession from corporation to Putharikkandam. School students, government institutions and political party representatives will be part of this. A plastic collection drive has been scheduled on December 7. Unlike the previous collection drives, collection points will be set up in all 100 wards. Plastic waste will be handed over to non-profit Sarojini Ponnaiya Foundation Thursday.

The Nagercoil-based NGO has been assisting the city corporation in plastic collection drives. Until recently, they had been deferring their drive, as they found it difficult to encash the corporation’s cheques after demonetisation. The corporation will be primarily dealing with the solid waste management aspect of Haritha Keralam. An organising committee was formed to plan and monitor the activities towards the launch scheduled on December 8. Activities related to promoting organic agriculture will be conducted. For this the corporation has sought the support of Krishi Bhavans.
