Mahadayi: Karnataka plans review plea

Siddaramaiah held a meeting with the state legal team, Advocate general M.R. Naik and Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil on Wednesday.

Bengaluru: The state government is contemplating filing a review petition before the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal, seeking review of its interim order dated July 27, rejecting the Karnataka plea to lift 7 tmc of water from Mahadayi river.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a meeting with the state legal team, Advocate general M.R. Naik and Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil on Wednesday. The legal team and AG have advised the CM that it would be better to file the review petition before the tribunal under section 5(3) of the Inter- State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.

The filing of SLP before the Supreme Court would adversely affect the state’s interests if the Apex Court declined to interfere in the order of the Tribunal. The state is likely to likely approach the Tribunal by filing a review petition rather than approaching the Supreme Court, said Mr. Brijesh Kalappa, Advocate appearing on behalf of Karnataka before the Mahadayi Tribunal.

To discuss the legal course of action with Karnataka government advocate before the Mahadayi tribunal, Fali S. Nariman, Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil and Advocate General Mr. Naik will meet Mr Nariman on August 5 at Delhi.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has called an all party meeting on August 7 to discuss athe order of the Tribunal. Floor leaders in the Legislature, MPs and district in-charge ministers of Mumbai Karnataka region have been invited.
