Kerala High Court to consider plea against Padmanabhaswamy Temple churidar row

The petitioners alleged that the decision to allow churidar was against the temple's centuries-old tradition.

Kochi: The devaswom bench of Kerala High Court will consider the plea regarding wearing churidar at the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuaram. Two fresh petitions were filed before the court on Friday. The petitions were filed against the decision of Executive Officer of the temple which allowed women to wear churidar inside the temple. The petitioners were Rani V. Nair of Thuruvananthapuram, Venkata Iyer also from Thuruvananthapuram and two others.

A section of devotees protested against the decision of the Executive Officer (EO) K.N. Sateesh, allowing women to enter the temple wearing salwar and churidar and offer prayers. Women devotees wear a ‘mundu’ (dhoti) over their waist if they were wearing salwar and churidar before entering the shrine. The petitioners alleged that the decision to allow churidar was against the temple’s centuries-old tradition.
