KOCHI: All civic bodies in the district have been told to implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme in an effort to resolve the stray dog menace. The district panchayat will give assistance to set up the facility. A meeting convened by district collector Muhammad Y. Safirulla on Thursday also decided to intensify sterilisation process for the strays. In Ernakulam, 14 panchayats and six municipalities have the wherewithal to set up the ABC facility.
Kochi Corporation has been operating a modern veterinary hospital at Brahmapuram which has sterilised nearly 2000 strays within a year. Instructions have been given to district animal welfare department officials to provide necessary assistance to the local bodies. The civic bodies have to submit weekly reports to the district collector on the number of animals being sterilised.
