CHENNAI: With CBSE reverting back to board exams for class 10 from next academic year (2017-18), students have to study the entire syllabus for the annual exam as compared to only 50 per cent of the syllabus in the existing semester pattern.
However, the board clarified that the existing scheme of examination for class 10 will continue for this academic year (2016-17). As per the remodelled assessment structure announced by the CBSE on Tuesday, 80 marks will be given to the board exam and 20 marks will be given to the internal assessment. The internal assessment consists of the periodic test (10 marks), notebook submission (5 marks) and subject enrich activity (5 marks).
The students have to secure 33 per cent marks in board and internal exam in each subject. Marks and grades both will be awarded for individual subjects. “After a wider consultation with all stakeholders, the CBSE has decided to restore the board exams for class 10. Over 95 per cent of the parents voted for the board exam with the entire syllabus,” said Ajith Prasad Jain, Senior Principal, Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidhyashram. He is also one of the governing body members of the board.
“After writing in the semester pattern in class 10, the students are finding it difficult to cope with the class 11 and 12 exams which are based on the entire syllabus,” he explained. On scrapping the school based examination he said, “The students who opted for school based examination found it difficult to join the state-board schools. Hence, the dual scheme of examination is replaced with the board exams.”
