Kozhikode Corporation cracks down on unsafe buildings

The closure was based on the order by Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth who is also the chairman of the Disaster Management Authority.

KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on Tuesday closed down one more building for violating fire and safety norms. Sky Towers near Mavoor Road was shut down by Corporation officials with the help of the Police after a nearly three-hour-long eviction process. The closure was based on the order by Kozhikode District Collector N Prasanth who is also the chairman of the Disaster Management Authority.

On Monday, the KMCT Engineering College building was shut down by the Mukkam Municipality following a similar order from the Collector who is also the District Magistrate. According to Corporation Town Planning section officials, National Hospital, Kalyan Kendra and Markaz Complex are also facing action for not complying with the directions to ensure safety norms.

The building was given notice to rectify the defects two months ago, according to officials. The order was issued based on a report by the Fire and Rescue Services Assistant Divisional Officer after a recent fire mishap in a City textiles showroom. Kozhikode Corporation Deputy Mayor Meera Darsak said that the Corporation would take strict action against other buildings on the list in the coming days.
