Malappuram: Drug abuse cases in the state have gone up 68 per cent this year when compared to previous year's statistics, said excise commissioner Rishiraj Singh. Mr. Singh was inaugurating year-long anti-drug campaign in the district on Wedesday. He said that raids around schools and colleges would be beefed up to reduce drug abuse cases among students. The campaign, spearheaded by district trauma care in association with excise, police and health departments, covers a spectrum of activities including door-to-door campaigns that targets to cover all the households in the district.

There are also plans to rehabilitate those who have given up drug trafficking and illegal liquor sales. In a survey conducted by the district trauma care unit recently, it was found that middlemen were using disabled persons for the purpose of illegal drug sales and trafficking. To monitor such activities students' trauma care units will also be set up in schools and colleges in the district.
