Solar energy to power co-op banks

Five branches of the Villupuram CCBs would be powered by the solar energy at a cost of Rs 11 lakh each.

Chennai: In an effort that could go a long way in bringing down the power bills, the state government has proposed to harness the solar energy to run the Central Cooperative Banks (CCBs) and Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Societies, cooperation minister Sellur K. Raju informed the Assembly on Monday.

Five branches of the Villupuram CCBs would be powered by the solar energy at a cost of Rs 11 lakh each while another Rs 20 lakh would be spent to install solar photovoltaic panels at the Tiruchengode APCMS, as per the instruction of the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, Raju said in his reply to the House after moving the grants for his department.

About Rs 3.83 crore would be spent on improving the infrastructure at the Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Societies at Uthamapalayam, Theni, Kaveripattinam, Krishnagiri, Tiruchengode, besides Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society office and Tiruchengode Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society headquarters, he said.

High-tech safety vaults in 50 Coop institutions:
Mr Raju said as part of a measure to safeguard the jewels and other valuables of the customers, it has been proposed to establish high tech safety vaults at 50 cooperative institutions. These safety vaults would come up at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. He also announced the setting up of similar safety vaults in 34 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks and Rural Cooperative Banks at a cost of '1.02 crore.

The loan component for salaried women working in CCBs and Urban Cooperative Banks would be increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.
