Nominations pour in on Mahalaya Amavasai

In Chennai, 387 aspirants submitted their nominations to contest for ward councillor posts.

Chennai: The auspicious Mahalaya Amavasai, observed on Friday, boosted the nominations to the local body polls.

According to state election commission, a record number of 1.65 lakh aspirants submitted their nominations on Friday for the October 17 and 19 civic polls. With three more days remaining for the last date of nominations, a total of 2.31 lakh papers have been received across the state.

In Chennai, 387 aspirants submitted their nominations to contest for ward councillor posts. Most of the candidates who submitted their papers were from the DMDK, BJP and BSP on Friday. In Chennai, the poll officials had so far received 733 nominations.

Corporation commissioner and district election officer D. Karthikeyan launched a 24-hour toll free helpline for voters in Chennai to record poll related complaints.

A press release from the corporation said special officers has been deputed to monitor the helpline and voters in Chennai can lodge their complaints at 1800 425 7012, the release said.
