LDF government acts to regulate admissions

Action likely against KMCT, Karuna and Kannur medical colleges for violating agreement with govt

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has finally chosen to use the powers vested with it to regulate medical admissions. Its decision to act against KMCT, Karuna and Kannur medical colleges for violating the agreement with the government is in contrast to that of the last government which helped the colleges take over the entire seats. KMCT Medical College, Kozhikode, had taken over the admission to all seats without giving any to the common admission process of the state government. Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, and Kannur Medical College, Ancharakandi, Kannur, had gone for higher fees than that fixed through the agreement with the government.

The government had informed the Supreme Court that admissions to more than 250 seats have to be completed to get a favourable order on extending the deadline for admissions for another week. The 250 seats identified were those in self-financing colleges that did not surrender the vacant seats for the common counselling process violating the court order that such seats should be handed over to the government. Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has also made it clear in the Assembly that the government would go for legal action against colleges which violated the government’s decision.

Meanwhile, the Admission Supervisory Committee headed by Justice J.M. James also informed the Supreme Court that it had not received any documents regarding admissions held to Karuna Medical College. The court told the committee that it would look into the issue. Last year, Azeezia Medical College, Kollam, KMCT Medical College, Karuna Medical College, Kannur Medical College, MES Medical College, Malappuram, and Travancore Medical College, Kollam had not cooperated with the government for an agreement. They conducted admissions to all the seats on their own. However, the then government did not take steps to rein in these colleges.
