Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao to take charge of Tamil Nadu too

Change in Raj Bhavan as Rosaiah leaves.

Chennai: Konijeti Rosaiah is bidding adieu to Tamil Nadu as his tenure of five years in the Raj Bhavan has ended. As Governor, he had maintained the best of ties with the ruling AIADMK and its supremo and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Considering his excellent equation with the CM and his good ties with the Centre, there was some expectation that he might get an extension, but it appears the Union Government had other plans.

The tenure of Mr Rosaiah, who assumed office as Governor of Tamil Nadu on August 31, 2011 ended on Tuesday. The Rashtrapati Bhavan announced on Wednesday that Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao would hold additional charge of Tamil Nadu.

“Mr C. Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, to discharge the “functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Tamil Nadu are made vice Shri K. Rosaiah, who completed his tenure on 30 August 2016,” an official communiqué from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

Mr Rosaiah, a Congress veteran who held various positions in Andhra Pradesh including that of Chief Minister, was one of the very few Governors not asked to quit after the NDA Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over in May 2014.

The Union Home Ministry is likely to consult Ms Jayalalithaa and the TN government in the next few days on the new Governor. Mr Rao, a veteran BJP leader from Telangana, was appointed as Maharashtra Governor in 2014 when the Narendra Modi government made a slew of gubernatorial appointments after it took over in May that year.
