Thiruvananthapuram corporation allots houses to beneficiaries

Eighteen beneficiaries in general category and six in scheduled caste category did not participate.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The houses built by the city corporation as part of the BSUP project were allotted to the beneficiaries on Thursday. TC numbers have been allotted to 213 flats in general category and 105 flats in the scheduled caste category. Eighteen beneficiaries in general category and six in scheduled caste category did not participate.

The beneficiaries were chosen from 100 wards. The ones present were asked to pick their floor, block and TC numbers using a lot system. The flats were built over an area of nine acres and 43 centres at Kalladimugham acquired by the corporation in 1988. The project cost Rs 23.17 crore. An amount of Rs 6.5 crore was spent on the houses for SC category, Rs 14.10 crore for general category houses, Rs 95.42 lakh on an old age shelter, Rs 1.72 crore for electrification and Rs 1.55 crore for drinking water.

The function was inaugurated by Mayor V.K. Prasanth and presided over by Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar. Former welfare standing committee chairperson Palayam Rajan, education standing committee chairperson S. Unnikrishnan and welfare standing committee chairperson R. Geethagopal were present. The BJP councillors registered their protest against not being informed about the function. Karamana councillor Ajith said that all councillors should have been told about it.
