Kochi Metro civil works are right on track

Aluva-JN stadium work to be over by July.

Kochi: Major contractor Larsen and Toubro (L&T), which was entrusted with the civil works in the Aluva-Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stretch, will complete the construction activities and wind up its operations by July.

L&T is responsible for a total of 12 metro station buildings and the elevated viaduct in the section. Its construction unit, Heavy Civil Infrastructure Business, received the project contract in May 2013. Though the work in other sections fell behind target, L&T is on course to meet the deadline set by the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation).

“We are into the last leg of construction activities entrusted to us as work of the metro stations at Aluva and JLN stadium are currently progressing. We aim to compete 95 per cent of the work by June and have kept one month as the buffer period taking into account eventualities such as heavy monsoon. The crossover viaduct at the busy Edapally Junction, almost the highest in terms of ground clearance (16 metres), will be completed by May end. We started the work on June 7, 2013, and are happy to stick to the construction schedule provided by E. Sreedharan,” said a senior L&T officer.

L&T Project Manager Subramanium Itta has conveyed to the DMRC the handing over of the viaduct in the KC-3 region by July. Metro authorities plan a crucial trial run in both to and fro directions in the Muttom-Edapally section. Commercial operations of the Kochi Metro are scheduled to commence from November 1 this year in the Aluva-Maharajas College section.
