8 MLAs hold key to Cong's Oppn status

The TRS is hell-bent on ensuring that the Congress does not get the status of the main Opposition party.

Hyderabad: There is a plan behind the delay in the formation of the Cabinet and summoning of the Assembly.

When the Assembly is summoned, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will meet and elect its leader and inform the Assembly secretariat that it has done so.

The Assembly secretariat has to recognise the CLP leader as leader of the Opposition who is accorded Cabinet rank. The TRS is hell-bent on ensuring that the Congress does not get the status of the main Opposition party. If eight Congress MLAs defect, the Congress will be recognised as merely a group in the Assembly.

After the defection of four Congress MLCs to the TRS, the Council chairman had withdrawn the Opposition leader status to Congress MLC Shabbier. To get Opposition leader status, Congress requires four MLCs but it has only two now.
