Chennai: According to a government order (GO), the first phase of the Tirumazhisai Satellite Township spread over 130 acres and comprising land in Kuthambakkam, Parvatharajapuram, and Chembarambakkam villages will be built at a cost of Rs 245.70 crore from Tamil Nadu Housing Board's (TNHB) funding.
TNHB will be taking over powers of local bodies to implement the first phase of this much-delayed township project that was aimed at providing affordable housing for many low and middle-income families.
By funding the project with Rs 245 crore under Section 152 of the Tamil Nadu State Housing Board Act, 1961, the GO also notifies that planning, regulation of construction, laying roads and drainage systems, providing water and electricity connections will be undertaken by TNHB instead of local panchayat bodies.
The GO has been issued with the concurrence of rural development and panchayat raj departments.
According to sources, implementation of the phase one will be done after widening the Bangaru canal, constructing a bridge across it and also laying a 120 feet approach road to connect the satellite township project.
The project announced in 2011 by former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, was scaled down from 311.05 acres of land in Chembarambakkam, Kuthambakkam, Parvatharajapuram, Narasingapuram and Vellavedu villages near Tirumazhisai, in Tiruvallur district, to 130.17 acres.
