Hyderabad: Municipal administration minister K.T. Rama Rao on Friday said that the government is monitoring drinking water quality in the city to prevent the Bholakpur-type contamination. “Around 3,000 water samples are being collected from different parts of the city every day. These samples are tested by private agencies every day,” the minister informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Mr Rao said that the entire water pipeline and sewage pipeline network is being repl-aced in the city to prevent contamination on the account of mixing of water and sewage pipelines.
Mr Rao said Hyderabad water board is gearing up for daily water supply in both core areas and peripheral areas of the city from next year. “We are spending Rs 1,900 crore to set up water pipeline network in peripheral areas. For core areas of the city, another Rs 500 crore is being spent to replace old water pipeline network spread over 405 km. This apart, Rs 1,240 crore is being spent to replace sewage lines,” he added.
The minister said the mandals and villages located outside ORR limits are also being brought under HMWSSB to ensure adequate water supply. Mr Rao said roads over an extent of 2,600-km need to be dug up to lay new water and sewage pipeline network. “Keeping in mind the incovenience that will be caused to public due to digging of roads in the city, we have instructed GHMC and HMWSSB to start works only after road restoration tenders are finalised,” the minister said.
