28 school vans booked by RTO for violating safety norms

Auto-rickshaws should not carry more than five school children, but we found many had more than 10.

Bengaluru: Officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Thursday carried out a surprise check in 150 school vans, including autorickshaws, and penalized 28 for violation of various norms. One vehicle was seized for violation of permit norms.

Many of these vehicles had no permission to ferry children. “In many cases the attendants were absent and in some cases they were caught for overloading. Auto-rickshaws should not carry more than five school children, but we found many had more than 10. Parents should be careful about this,” said an RTO officer.

He lamented that many schools, including some well known, were not following the norm to provide transport service to students. Hence the parents are forced to rely on autos, he added.
