Visakhapatnam traffic police to map accident spots

Every year over 350 people lose their lives in road accidents.

Visakhapatnam: With city roads claiming hundreds of lives every year, traffic police has decided to map the vulnerable spots where fatal accidents occur. After mapping the areas with high frequency of accidents, the traffic cops will conduct a study along with civic authorities, RTA, NHAI and few other departments to work on accident prevention, either by posting police personnel or changing the road engineering.

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, over 1,600 people were killed on city roads in the past five years since 2010 and majority of the accidents were reported on the NH-16 stretch that was passing through Vizag city. In 2016, over 100 persons were reported dead in road accidents up to March.

City police chief T. Yoganand said their motive is to reduce the fatalities on roads and also to mitigate the traffic congestion during the peak hours.

Sources in the police said that the cops with support of few other departments will encompass the key factors such as time of day/night, stretch of road, vehicles involved in the accidents and reasons for the accidents and steps to lessen the accidents on those spots. Rash or speedy driving, drunken driving, wrong side parking, overtaking from the wrong direction (left side) and few others were the major causes, says ACPs (Traffic) K. Prabhakar and M. Srinivas.

Majority of the motorists have little idea on the road conditions and traffic flow and sometimes their negligent driving is leading to fatalities.

“After completion of fatal accident mapping, we will decide the required steps, installation signal points, deploying more cops, change the road-engineering to make safer road,” said an officer.
