Telangana students hit as OBC list is yet to be updated

NCBC on its website has uploaded the state-wise list of OBCs. The Telangana link says: “No records foundâ€.

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government’s negligence in seeking updation of the OBCs’ list from the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) is likely to prove costly for BCs in the state while applying for education opportunities and jobs at the national level in future.

Though it’s been two years since the state has been formed, the NCBC has not updated the list of OBCs on the ground that the government had not communicated anything officially in this regard.

As many as 32 BC castes notified by the state government are yet to find a place in the NCBC’s list. Only those castes figuring in the list are eligible for reservations in Central educational institutions and Central. At a time when the Centre has planned huge recruitment drives to fill over two lakh vacancies this year, the non-updation of the Telangana OBC list may result in OBCs losing reservations.

The NCBC on its official website www.ncbc.nic.in has uploaded the state-wise “Central List of OBCs”. However, under the Telangana link, one gets the message: “No records found”.

Telangana OBC list yet to be upgraded: NCBC
The TS government’s negligence in seeking updation of the OBCs’ list from the NCBC is likely to prove costly for BCs in the state.

NCBC chairperson Justice V. Eswaraiah said, “The TS list is yet to be uploaded. Whatever is applicable to AP, the same will be applicable for TS.” He, however, refused to comment about the 32 BC castes in TS not updated with the NCBC.

The argument that whatever is applicable to AP will be applicable to TS is being challenged by BC organisations who say that the TS government had removed 26 castes from the BC list (that are in the AP list) in 2014 and had added others. They say that lack of a specific OBC list for TS will give scope for unnecessary legal problems in future.

“We requested the TS government and NCBC for early updation of the TS OBC list and for uploading it on the NCBC website. But it is still pending,” said National BC Welfare Association president R. Krishnaiah.

The NCBC had held a public hearing in April 2015 over inclusion of some of these 32 castes but there has been no progress as the TS government failed to provide details to the NCBC.
