Ban vehicles more than 15 years old: KSPCB

The plan has been prepared keeping in mind the infrastructural growth of the city.

Bengaluru: In order to tackle the surging air and noise pollution, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has come up with 48 point draft action plan. The plan has been prepared keeping in mind the infrastructural growth of the city.

The action plan recommends the trasnport department to impose a ban on the use of two-stroke vehicles and the vehicles that are more than 15 years old. Commercial vehicles that have had its run for more than 10 years should be banned in the city.

Though the board has proposed use of CNG buses to the BMTC, KSPCB Chairman Lakshman has said that the BMTC will go ahead with their plan for electric vehicles.

“They have to speed up the purchase of electric vehicles. The BSII and BSIII buses have to be retired and by 2020 the BMTC will have to comply with BV1 vehicles as well,” he said.

He further explained that the board has asked the transport department to keep a check on noisy altered silencers, since they are banned.

The proposed action plan has been presented to the coordination committee comprising officials from Transport and Road Safety, Bruhat Begaluru Mahanagare Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Traffic Police, BMTC, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), Urban Land Transport Department etc.

“As of now the proposed plan has not received any objection from any department,” Lakshman pointed out.

Since there have been a lot of complaints against the Emission Testing Centres (ETC), the action plan deliberates on the checking of calibration of emission monitoring equipment once in six months.
