As a case study, Siddipet deserves closer look before being cashless

At 62 per cent when compared to the state's 67 per cent, literacy rate in Siddipet district is lower than the state average.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s announcement of making Siddipet Assembly constituency a model constituency for cashless transactions in two months deserves a closer look.

While constituency-wise data is not available, the data of Siddipet district prepared by officials after reorganisation of districts, shows that the district has a population of 10,12,065 with 397 revenue villages in 399 gram panchayats.

At 62 per cent when compared to the state’s 67 per cent, literacy rate in Siddipet district is lower than the state average. The district has 72 banks, 28 of which are nationalised banks.

Of these 28 banks, 19 are State Bank and its associates, five private banks and the rest are regional banks. In the district there are three head post offices, 32 sub post offices and 174 branch post offices.

The urban population of the district is 1,39,052 and 8,73,013 people live in rural areas. The number of households in the district is 2,38,049.

The literacy rate among males is 72 per cent and 51 per cent among females. The working population in the district is 5,09,563. The district has 1,71,665 agricultural labourers and 1,40,911 people in other vocations. Siddipet has four RTC depots utilised by 283 buses which cumulatively cover 1,02,830 km daily.

Telangana seeks tips on its proposal
The Telangana state government has called upon citizens to give suggestions for promoting cashless transactions in the state. The suggestions should be sent to the email id: cashless.suresh@gmail.com.

It may ben mentioned here that the Chief Minister constituted a task force headed by senior IAS officer Suresh Chanda to study cashless payments and receipts system and suggest policy measures required for moving towards a cashless economy.
